Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II came out 12 years ago on Xbox and PC, but that doesn't mean the game can't be updated all these years later. In fact, it was updated earlier today on Steam.
The game was originally developed by Obsidian Entertainment, but Aspyr Media handled the recent update. It adds Mac and Linux support, marking the first time KOTOR II has been playable on those two platforms.
The update includes plenty of other additions, such as Steam achievements, widescreen resolutions, and controller support. The full list includes:
- 37 achievements to be earned through gameplay
- Steam Cloud saves
- Native widescreen resolution support
- Resolution support up to 4K and 5K
- Support for controllers, including Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation
- 3, and Playstation 4, along with several others (check the system requirements for details)
- Steam Workshop support! We proudly worked with the Restored Content Mod Team to have their famous TSLRCM up on launch day
The combination of workshop support and the Restored Content Mod is particularly exciting, as it adds a bunch of content that Obsidian originally wanted to include in the game.
Eurogamer spoke with Zbigniew Staniewicz, one of the team members on the Restored Content Mod team, about the new update and how he knew about it in advance.
"I knew about it for couple of months now, but I wasn't directly involved," he said. "I gave some feedback about achievements and our team made some suggestions about things that could be fixed, that we couldn't fix ourselves – Aspyr team had an advantage of working with game's source code. It's a very exciting news for all of us!"
KOTOR II is 25% off on Steam for the rest of the week to mark the occasion. I never did complete the game when I played it back in 2003, so I guess now is a great time to jump back in and actually beat it.
