GameStop Removing Free Game Code from Deus Ex: Human Revolution

According to reports, GameStop "desires" its employees to remove a free game code from boxes of Deus Ex: Human Revolution that would allow buyers to access the game via OnLive for free. Does this mean you can really buy the game new when GameStop breaks into the box beforehand?

A leaked memo (above) by a Field Operations Manager for GameStop named Josh Ivanoff states:

Please immediately remove and discard the On Live [sic] coupon from all regular PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Speaking with ArsTechnica, GameStop spokesperson Beth Sharum explains the reasons for the pull:

Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull these coupons.

The only reason that makes sense for this controversial practice is that GameStop fears OnLive as a competitor to the digital marketplace and its own distribution service called Impulse. If you think this is unfair—which it isjust don't purchase this game from GameStop or make sure that it is a sealed copy before you buy it.
