Netflix Exec Says Gamers Could See 4K Hardware Revisions for Xbox One, PlayStation 4

As part of a much larger piece at the Huffington Post, rumors are starting to rumble throughout electronics and entertainment that Netflix has taken charge of 4K video standards and delivery so much so that Forbes has called the firm "arguably the most significant current supplier of native 4K UHD content.

The business media giant is saying Netflix Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt has heard word that the latest video game console hardware could need a revision to support all of that beautiful video. Hunt told HuffingtonPost that 4K is "a big significant improvement" and that the company heard from Sony that a PS4 hardware revision was in the works. Here's the context from the article:

Aside from the lack of screens available to buy right now, there is also a dearth of set-top boxes capable of showing 4K HDR. Hunt said Sony had "promised" a hardware rev for the PS4 that will include a 4K video capability and that they would "expect eventually" for it to support HDR, as one example of where the industry will seek to catch up. But in the meantime any HDR TV will probably have a Netflix app built in, Hunt said, which solves the problem for now.

Don't take that as confirmation, particularly as Forbes has adorned their own headline assuming as much. Both firms replied with non-commitment and understandably standard PR side-stepping, but gamers know that R&D departments don't wait around.

I wouldn't be surprised if we did see a PlayStation or Xbox (or even Nintendo) hardware revision in the console space in the next 18 months.
