Nintendo Comments on Exclusion of AC Adapter in New Nintendo 3DS Packages

I managed to sneak away from yesterday's Nintendo event, detailed here, with a brand new "New" Nintendo 3DS in Black, but as the company has stated you'll need to have an AC adapter of your own for the unit.

When asked for comment, Nintendo told IGN that it would rather keep production costs down with so many 3DS units on store shelves currently:

New Nintendo 3DS XL uses the same AC adapter as any Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo DSi system. Rather than raise cost of New Nintendo 3DS XL by charging consumers for a component they may already own, we are giving them the option to only buy if they need an AC adapter.

This is not the first time this issue has come up for Nintendo fans, with the original Nintendo 3DS LL launch in Japan going without an AC adapter as well. When Nintendo 3DS XL, as its known in the west, was released outside of Japan it came with a power chord but the same is not true of "New" Nintendo 3DS units on store shelves in February.

AC Adapters for Nintendo DSi, Nintendo DSi XL, Nintendo 2DS, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo 3DS XL will work with "New" Nintendo 3DS hardware, as will second party manufacturer brands like those you'd find at GameStop or online retailers.
