Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) is, of course, proving to be very popular with gamers on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. With 2020 marking the release of new console hardware, however, lots of players are wondering if they’ll have to end their career early or whether there might be next-gen versions of the game on the horizon. So, do Activision and Infinity Ward have launches for Modern Warfare PS5 and Modern Warfare Xbox Series X planned?

Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare coming to PS5?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare hasn’t been announced for release on Sony’s next-generation PS5 hardware. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the latest CoD will never be playable on PlayStation 5, however.

At the time of writing, only three games have been announced for the PS5: Godfall, Outriders, and Rainbow Six Siege. The latter game is of particular interest here, having only just been confirmed and being a port of a current-gen title. With Ubisoft’s flagship first-person shooter making the generational leap, it’s entirely possible that Activision could follow suit by bringing a Modern Warfare PS5 version to market.
Even if there isn’t a dedicated port and we instead receive a new installment in the iconic Call of Duty franchise on PS5, it’s still possible that the PS4 version of Modern Warfare could be playable via backwards compatibility. This functionality has been confirmed by Sony, though it’s currently not possible to state definitively whether or not Modern Warfare will be supported.
Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare coming to Xbox Series X?
In much the same vein as a PS5 version, no Modern Warfare Xbox Series X release has been confirmed at the time of writing. We do know, however, that Microsoft’s Phil Spencer is aiming to make the Xbox Series X fully backwards compatible. If the team manages to achieve this goal, the existing Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be playable on next-gen Series X hardware.
