MW3: Why Has Weapon Tuning Been Removed & Is Not In Modern Warfare 3?

With the release of CoD Modern Warfare 3, fans eagerly await the multiplayer experience that has become a hallmark of the franchise. Recent revelations suggest that the game is not shying away from forging its own path. Sledgehammer Games has opted to depart from the Weapon Tuning system featured in Modern Warfare 2. Despite the potential of the feature to enhance customization, they have decided to part ways with this feature.

Why has weapon tuning been removed from MW3?

Sledgehammer Games announced that based on community feedback it has taken down the weapon tuning option from both MW2 and MW3. This is to make sure that the game is not unfair for inexperienced players or players of a lower skill level.

Sledgehammer said:

โ€œBased on community feedback, Sledgehammer Games has removed the Weapon Tuning feature present in MWII and has made further improvements to make Gunsmith easier to use. This change to Weapon Tuning applies to both MWII and MWIII weapons that utilize modifications.โ€œ

Not everyone in the game would know the best settings to tweak guns for player advantage. This extra layer of customizability added to the complexity of the modification of guns. Additionally, some guns in the game started to become noticeably overpowered.

This removal of Weapon Tuning from the game applies to both Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3. Without this feature, a balance in the gunplay is the target. Weapon Tuning allowed players to tweak the abilities of individual attachments. For example, players were able to tune stats like fire rate, range, accuracy, damage, ADS speed, recoil stabilization, and more. Even though it was available for guns only after reaching a certain level, it proved to mess up the weapon balancing of the game.

A solution to this issue could be that Activision tweaks the base stats of guns to balance out the tweaks made by weapon tuning. However, this would have a negative impact on the players who had not used Weapon Tuning to master their weapons. Hence, we will not see Weapon Tuning in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
