MW3 Skill-Based Matchmaking: Does Modern Warfare 3 Have SBMM?

Does MW3 have skill-based matchmaking? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is out now, with players rushing in to get their hands back on the latest weapons and operators. However, one of the more controversial topics surrounding any new CoD is the introduction of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) in multiplayer lobbies. Even though it was introduced to make the game fairer for players, it also seems to have the opposite effect, meaning many question whether or not SBMM has made its way to MW3.

Does Modern Warfare 3 have skill-based matchmaking?

Yes, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has skill-based matchmaking. Skill-based matchmaking prioritizes the playerโ€™s skill level over ping during matchmaking. This brings up an issue where higher-skilled players face difficulty in maintaining their winning streak in the game as they have to face players of a similar or equal skill level. On the other hand, this type of matchmaking is beneficial for players of a lower skill level, as theyโ€™re able to steer clear of high-skill players. They have more room for improvement in such lobbies.

In skill-based matchmaking, skill level is given priority over connection quality. Due to this the experience of the game is not great for all players, as SBMM is prioritized over everything else. This means that some regions do suffer connection issues if there is a low density of players available from that region.

If it werenโ€™t for skill-based matchmaking, players of lower skill levels would suffer more as they would have to face tougher opponents in every game. This would make it very very difficult for them to level up/rank up and also make the overall game experience for them unpleasant.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to the balance maintained between the various aspects of matchmaking. When such a large audience connects to hop into lobbies together, deciding the matchmaking protocol is definitely not an easy job.
