The Subdetection Unit is a local specialty material in Genshin Impact that is used to ascend Wriothesley, a new 5-Star Cryo character introduced in version 4.1. It is a mechanical bug that resembles a butterfly, and can only be found in the Fontaine region.

The Genshin Impact Subdetection Unit location is found in the northern area of Fontaine and is used for the Ascension of the new 5-Star Cryo character, Wriothesley. You will need a total of 168 Subdetection Units to fully Ascend Wriothesley.
Where to find Subdetection Units
There are a total of 77 Subdetection Units that can be found in Genshin Impact. They are all located in the Fontaine region, north of the Court of Fontaine. Here is a list of all the Subdetection Unit locations in Genshin Impact:
- Mont Esus East: There are 15 Subdetection Units to find in the Mont Esus East area. You can find them scattered throughout the area, on the ground, on walls, and even flying in the air. There are also two non-respawning Subdetection Units located in the building north of the tall tower.
- Experimental Field Generator: There are 10 Subdetection Units to find in the Experimental Field Generator area. Five of them can be found in the Hilichurl camp, and the other five are scattered throughout the area.
- New Fontaine Research Institute: There are 22 Subdetection Units to find in the New Fontaine Research Institute area. They are scattered throughout the Institute, both inside and outside.
- Central Laboratory Ruins: There are 30 Subdetection Units to find in the Central Laboratory Ruins area. This area is located underground, and you will need to complete the side quest “The Secrets of the Central Laboratory” to access it.
How to Farm Subdetection Units in Genshin Impact
Subdetection Units respawn every 2 days, so you can farm them on a regular basis. However, it is important to note that there are a few Subdetection Units that are non-respawning, meaning that you can only obtain them once.
