Baldur's Gate 3 Gems Selling Jewelry Gemstones Jewels

Baldur’s Gate 3 Gems: Should I Sell Jewels & Jewelry?

Baldur’s Gate 3 gems appear frequently as an enemy drop or loot found in nooks and crannies in the game. But players want to know whether they should sell gems or save them for a feature later, like alchemy or a possible enchanting system. You can find all sorts of gemstones from agate, ruby, onyx, jade, and malachite just laying around in barrels, chests, and other hidden locations while you’re exploring. The same goes for jewelry like non-magical rings and necklaces. Here’s whether you should keep jewels and jewelry, or if you should just sell them in BG3.

Should you sell Baldur’s Gate 3 gems and jewelry?

Yes, you should sell gems and common jewelry in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Thus far, the game doesn’t have an enchanting system, like socketing a weapon or armor with a gem like in Diablo 4 for a magical effect or using it in alchemy. There may some secret recipes with various gemstones, but so far we believe it’s more valuable to sell off any jewels you find, especially in the early game when you need as much gold as you can muster to upgrade your characters. We recommend raising merchant affinity and using high CHA party members to get a good sale price.

At any rate, this isn’t particularly a surprise considering that BG3 is based off of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Gems and basic jewelry in D&D 5E are essentially sellable treasure. Sometimes a DM is willing to transform rings and amulets into magical items, but there’s no laid-out system for crafting magical items from scratch in the system.

And from what we’ve played of Baldur’s Gate 3 so far, the game mainly banks on the new alchemy crafting system instead of outright enchanting. It primarily uses ingredients found in the wild to make extracts and such. There’s a chance that you may need gemstones for some endgame recipes, but even if this is the case, they won’t be difficult to find or purchase then.
