Sword of the Sea Journey 2 Sequel

Is Sword of the Sea a Sequel to Journey?

If you’re wondering if Sword of the Sea is a direct sequel to Journey, it looks like it’s a possibility. This next project from Giant Squid, known for games like Abzu, was revealed during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, and the environments look very close to Journey’s. In the short trailer for the game, the main characters drifts through glimmering sands with a surfboard that looks very much like the flowing scarf worn by the traveler in Journey. So here’s whether Sword to the Sea is follow-up to Journey.

Is Sword of the Sea Journey 2?

Sword of the Sea could indeed be a sequel to Journey. While it’s not called Journey 2, the game is from the creators of Journey. However, it looks more likely that it’s a spiritual successor.

Since we don’t have any more details for Sword of the Sea from the teaser trailer, we can only hope that Giant Squid and its development team has the blessing of thatgamecompany, the developer for the original Journey. In particular, we hope that it has the consent of Jenova Chen to make a game that seems to exist within the same world as Journey’s.

That said, there is no mention of Sword of the Sea being a sequel to Journey in the official PlayStation blog post of the game from Matt Nava, the creative director of Giant Squid. We would expect that Journey would be mentioned in the post in some capacity. So at best, we think that this could be a spiritual successor.

From the blog post, we learn that the surfboard in the trailer is actually called a Hoversword that is part “snowboard, skateboard, and hoverboard all in one.” The environment is built around the ruins of the Necropolis of the Gods that looks like a skate park. As the Wraith, you’re asked to restore life to dead tombs, shipwrecks, and battlefields, bringing back fish and creatures to the land.

Sword of the Sea does not have a release date yet, but it will release on PS5.
