  • Wind Temple – Rito

Are there traditional dungeons in Tears of the Kingdom?

There aren’t any traditional dungeons in Tears of the Kingdom. Despite pre-release hype, these are more like enhanced versions of the Divine Beasts from Breath of the Wild. Each requires you to complete five tasks that open the path to the boss fight. If you count navigating the obstacles before entering the temple as part of the dungeon, it does take longer to complete them than it did the Divine Beasts, but they’re not very lengthy.

Traditional dungeons in Zelda are linear affairs that center around finding an item and then using it to navigate obstacles to find the keys needed to reach a boss. Tears of the Kingdom’s dungeons are more freeform and allow you to complete each of the five required tasks in any order. Unfortunately, they’re also clearly marked on your map, which takes a lot of the challenge out of the experience.

Some players will be disappointed that Tears of the Kingdom’s dungeons don’t return to the traditional format. However, they each have a theme, which does address the criticism that the Divine Beasts were all the same aesthetically.
