Shadow and Bone Season 2: What Is a Durast?

Shadow and Bone Season 2 has landed on Netflix, and with it comes a big question from fans: just what is a Durast? The word was spoken early on in the second season, and has those who aren’t familiar with the books on which the series is based scratching their heads. Here is everything there is to know about Durasts, along with their abilities, and whether or not they are Grisha.

Please note that there are major spoilers for Shadow and Bone Season 2 ahead, including the true identity of one lead character.

What is a Durast in Shadow and Bone, and are they Grisha?

Durasts are Grisha who are able to manipulate solid objects on a molecular level, such as wood, glass, steel, and stone. They are known to wear purple keftas, and are of the Materialki order. A nickname they have picked up due to their close work quarters with Alkemi is Fabrikators.

In Shadow and Bone Season 2, it is revealed that Jesper is one of the Durast. There have been hints along the way, including moments in the show’s first season, that suggested he had magical abilities. For example, he “fixed” Kaz’s cane, which was now clearly an easy task due to his abilities. As he is untrained, however, his abilities remain on the weaker side for now.

“Your gun misfired in Arken’s train,” Kaz recalled in one of the new episodes. “You fixed it without moving. You repaired my cane with no tools. And when you shoot, you never miss.” Despite not being a trained Durast, it is obvious that Jesper has some pretty solid practice. Exactly how powerful he could become remains to be seen.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 follows Alina as she attempts to bring down the Shadow Fold and save Ravka from destruction. Viewed as a traitor by many, and a beacon of hope to others, this could prove to be more difficult than anything she has faced before; especially when going up against General Kirigan and his new Grisha recruits.
