The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro use Lightning to charge. Despite rumors that the iPhone 14 or 14 Pro would use USB-C or be wireless only, Apple continues to use the same standard it introduced with the iPhone 5.
Is iPhone 14 and 14 Pro use USB-C or Lightning to charge?
All models of the iPhone 14 use Lightning to charge. Despite rumors and popular demand, Apple hasn’t made any commitments to use USB-C in the future. However, the company has been slowly switching the iPad family over to USB-C, which gives us hope for the iPhone line.
Additionally, the European Union’s Radio Equipment Directive mandates that phones sold within its borders must use a single charging solution. For now, that solution is designated to be USB-C. This directive takes effect in 2024, so Apple would need to switch to the new connector by the release of the iPhone 16 at the latest.
Alternatively, we may see the iPhone go wireless within the next two years. The European Union’s directive only applies to devices that are rechargeable via a wired cable. By using wireless charging only, Apple would dodge any penalties and potentially save money on charging ports and cords.
This year, though, things remain the same. From what we’ve seen, the iPhone 14’s charging capabilities are unchanged from last year’s model.
