New PS5 Model Differences: What Has Changed and Improved?

Sony has reportedly begun rolling out a new PS5 model in Australia. The Sony PlayStation 5 CFI-1202A comes with a disc drive while the PlayStation 5 CFI-1202B is the digital version, but what are the differences between these new models and the older PS5 models? Have there been any major improvements? Here’s our guide to all that’s known about the new PS5 models.

What is new for the CFI-1202A and CFI-1202B PS5 models?

The main difference between the new CFI-1202A and CFI-1202B PS5 models is that they’re significantly lighter than the previously revised model. The CFI-1202A weighs 3.9 kg, which is 300g lighter than the CFI-1102A model released in 2021 and 600g lighter than the launch model. Meanwhile, the CFI-1202B weighs 3.4 kg, which is 200g lighter than the CFI-1102B model released in 2021 and 500g lighter than the launch model.

The reason for this weight difference is yet to be revealed. The consoles’ spec sheets have been shared by Press Start but there are no differences on paper. The reason for the last weight difference turned out to be a smaller and lighter heatsink, but this was only discovered when the console was taken apart. So far nobody else has been able to get their hands on the new edition consoles to be able to do the same. The difference is unlikely to be another reduction in the size of the heatsink but it could be a similar alteration to a different component. It likely won’t be long before the real reason for the lighter console becomes apparent.

The change in console design follows news that PS5 consoles will be increased in price around the world with the exception of the US. This is “due to global economic environment, including high inflation rates.” The price increase becomes effective in Japan on September 15, the day that country is expected to start selling the new models at retail. There is no news as to when the new model will start arriving in other countries.
