Is Minions: The Rise of Gru a Prequel to Despicable Me?

Fans are wondering if Minions: The Rise of Gru is a prequel to Despicable Me or a sequel to Minions. After five movies in the series, the timeline is starting to get a little confusing. Fortunately, we’ll be able to clear it up for you below.

Is Minions: The Rise of Gru a Prequel to Despicable Me?

Apart from being the fifth movie in the series, Minions: The Rise of Gru is a prequel to Despicable Me. Also, it serves as a sequel to Minions, the Prequel spin-off movie that came out in 2015 to explore the origin of adorable yellow creatures.

The Rise of Gru takes place in the 1970s, where we see the origin of the titular criminal mastermind. At 12-years-old, Gru admires a group of villains known as Vicious 6. He wishes to grow his evil side stronger to join the group.

Eventually, he tries to become the group’s newest member by attending an interview. However, things don’t go well as Gru steals a precious stone from the group with the help of the Minions. He also ends up getting help from the former group leader, Wild Knuckles.

The film’s voice cast includes Steve Carell as Gru, Taraji P. Henson as Belle Bottom, the newly-appointed leader of The Vicious 6, and Pierre Coffin as the Minions.

The film was initially planned to release in July 2020. However, Universal Pictures was forced to postpone the film’s release schedule due to the Global pandemic. Fortunately, after waiting for two years, fans will finally get to see The Rise of Gru, as it makes its way to the big screens shortly. In the United States, it’s getting a theatrical release on July 1, 2022.
