The question of whether Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 4 has been renewed or canceled is a good one. Some of you might be surprised by the truncated third season at only ten episodes, compared to the first two seasons which had thirteen episodes each. But fans of this delightful isekai series will likely know and understand this from the very beginning of the season.
Will there be an Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 4 on Crunchyroll?
Ajia-Do Animation Works, the Japanese animation studio behind the anime, has not yet confirmed a fourth season for Ascendance of a Bookworm. However, it’s still early for announcements of anime renewals. So instead, let’s examine how likely this will happen.
On the positive side, Ascendance of a Bookworm has a strong and loyal international fanbase. The third season finale on Crunchyroll, which has only been out for about a day at the time of this writing, has 2,900 likes, whereas the very first episode of the anime released on Oct 2, 2019 has 3,200 likes. That’s a surprisingly high retention rate.
Sure, using likes to determine overall popularity and interest has its shortcomings, but at least this shows that the anime has a reliable following even after two and a half years. The isekai story of Main (or Myne) wanting to create books in a fairly book-less world, and the journey the seven-year-old has to take through business, religion, and the cutthroat world of the nobility still resonates with both audiences and critics alike.
Also, the series has plenty of material to draw from. Both the manga and the anime for Ascendance of a Bookworm are principally based on the light novel of the same name by Kazuki Miya. The season 3 finale covers the events around chapter 168 or so of the novels, which might sound like a lot, but the full series has a total of 677 chapters. So if the studio really wanted to, there could be a lot more than just a fourth season.
And, to keep this as spoiler-free as possible, let’s just say that the post-credits scene of the season 3 finale leaves a lot of room for a fourth season to be announced. It would seem that Ajia-Do Animation Works is very much ready to continue the story.
