With all the classics Square Enix has been re-releasing lately, fans are wondering if we’ll see a Xenogears remaster release date. With the announcement that Chrono Cross is coming to modern platforms, Xenogears is one of the more glaring of Square’s PS1-era classics to not come to current-gen consoles or PC. We’ll take a look at when and where this game might appear below.
Xenogears remaster release date rumors
Square Enix hasn’t announced a Xenogears remaster, but we’d be surprised if we didn’t get one in the near future. Chrono Cross composer Yasunori Mitsuda, who just did some work on updated music for the remaster, was also the composer for Xenogears. He could have easily done some work for that game as well while he was working on Chrono Cross.
Xenogears writer/director Tetsuya Takahashi left Square Enix after the game was released and formed Monolith Soft, which produced the Xenosaga and Xenoblade series. However, Square Enix owns the copyright to Xenogears, so a remaster could go ahead, even without Takahashi’s input.
What would be included in the remaster?
So far, Square Enix has upscaled the textures in its recent remasters at the very least. That might be the extent of the improvements outside of some quality of life improvements like save states.
Ideally, it would get the SaGa Frontier treatment. Unfortunately, most of the second disc is relegated to a visual novel. It would be great to see that content as originally intended. Unfortunately, the chances of that are likely pretty close to zero.
What platforms will it release on?
A Xenogears remaster would likely come to all current platforms. The performance requirements for the game are practically nil, so it should be able to run on pretty much anything.
If it came out right now, we’d guess that it’d be on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
