World of Warcraft 2 Release Date: PS4, PS5, Xbox, PC, Switch

World of Warcraft 2 Release Date: PS4, PS5, Xbox, PC, Switch

World of Warcraft is recognized by many as the king of massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Sure, it’s not the latest kid on the block, but it’s been a huge critical and commercial success. So, you’d imagine that Blizzard would be working on World of Warcraft 2, right? But is that the case? Is WoW 2 in development, and are there plans to release for consoles like the PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch?

What is the World of Warcraft 2 release date?

World of Warcraft 2 release date and platforms

World of Warcraft 2 is not in development, so it does not have a release date. Even if it were, given that the game hasn’t even been announced, it’d be years away. For now, there is no announcement, so there is no release date.

To be frank, Blizzard will probably never make World of Warcraft 2. First and foremost, there’s no reason to. World of Warcraft is designed and sold as an evolving product — known in the industry as games as a service. There’s no need to make a sequel when the team can continually add to the original product.

Plus, Blizzard still makes plenty of cash through annual WoW subscriptions. And a new release would almost certainly divide the player base, leading to more complications down the line. In other words, there are plenty of reasons to continue evolving the original game.

Will World of Warcraft 2 come to PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch?

It’s unlikely that World of Warcraft 2 would release for PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch. The original game has only ever been available for PC, and that hasn’t changed in the last 17 years.

Of course, it could be possible, hypothetically speaking, assuming Blizzard miraculously decided to develop WoW 2. Granted, given the size of a sequel like that, by the time it released, we may be in an entirely new console generation. Or, more likely, the rise of cloud gaming could render the need for gaming consoles obsolete.

Blizzard hasn’t mentioned any plans to develop World of Warcraft 2. There is no release date, and there are no known platforms, because the game doesn’t exist. Plenty of fans would love to see a sequel, but given the ongoing success of WoW, it’s just not very likely.
