FFXIV: Are mounts and minions account-wide or per-character?

FFXIV has gotten a massive influx of players over the last year, some of them coming from other MMOs. As such, many new players are wondering if mounts and minions are account-wide unlocks or if they’re obtained per character only. We’ll take a look at the somewhat confusing way this is implemented in Final Fantasy 14.

Are mounts and pets account-wide in FFXIV or per-character?

FFXIV Mount Account Restrictions

Some mounts and pets are account-wide in FFXIV, but most are unlocked per character only. That’ll be a bit confusing for those coming from MMOs like World of Warcraft where the opposite is true.

For the most part, account-wide mount and minion unlocks only come from some store purchases and the collector’s editions. This goes for all items, and players will need to make sure anything they buy from the cash shop specifically states it’s account-wide. Otherwise it’ll only unlock on one character.

It would be an excellent quality of life update if Square Enix adjusted mounts and minions to unlock similarly to the way they do in World of Warcraft. However, FFXIV does emphasize story more than most other MMOs. Part of why everything is locked to one character is because Square Enix intends players to stick with a single hero throughout their time with the game. While the option is open to create multiple characters, most players don’t.

Fortunately, players can unlock all the jobs with one character and change their look and name (for a fee). So, those that get tired of their avatar can completely change it without losing any progress.

The biggest drawback to the way FFXIV handles pets and mounts is that some are currently unobtainable. Unfortunately, this means that if players make a new character, they’ll completely lose access to these coveted collectibles. Hopefully, this is something that’ll be rectified in the future. For now, those concerned about collecting should stick with one character.
