Oculus Project Cambria headset release date price quest compatibility

What is the Oculus Project Cambria VR headset release date, price, and is it Quest compatible?

The Oculus Project Cambria headset was revealed during the Facebook Connect 2021 keynote and represents the company’s next generation of VR devices. Unfortunately, we were only offered a cursory glance at the headset, but what we saw got us excited. We also got some clues as to what Project Cambria’s release date and price will be and information about backward compatibility with the Quest.

When is the Oculus Project Cambria release date?

Project Cambria Teaser

While we didn’t get a specific release date, we know that Project Cambria will launch sometime next year. It was said that we’d see a deeper dive at an upcoming Facebook event, and the presentation was vague enough that we’d be surprised to see it before the latter half of 2022 at the earliest.

What will the Oculus Project Cambria VR headset cost?

Again, there wasn’t specific pricing information given during the Facebook Connect stream. However, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that it would sit at the “high end of the price spectrum.” This means it’ll certainly be more than the most expensive Oculus Quest 2 model, the 256 GB, at $399.99. That’s currently the only headset that Oculus sells, so the sky is the limit as far as pricing goes.

Will Project Cambria be backward compatible with the Oculus Quest headsets?

During the Facebook Connect stream, it was confirmed that Project Cambria will be backward compatible with Quest apps and games. It’s unknown if the new headset will completely replace the Quest 2, but we doubt it will. We’ll likely see a Quest 3 revealed sometime soon so that Oculus can continue to provide a low-cost headset.

The high price of the Project Cambria headset comes in part because it can display both VR and AR content. However, we predict that the Quest 3 will be VR only and lack the sensors and cameras needed for AR to cut costs.
