Knights of the Old Republic Remake canon

Is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake canon?

Is the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake canon in the current Star Wars continuity? Since Disney took over the brand, it’s long been mandated that all Star Wars content needs to be part of the overall continuity, including games such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. However, does that apply to a remake of a game from before Disney took over, or is the remake the canon version? Is the Star Wars KOTOR remake canon?

Is the KOTOR Remake canon in Star Wars?

Knights of the Old Republic Remake canon

KOTOR Remake is basically a full new game with no involvement from original creators BioWare, so Disney may use this opportunity to make the KOTOR story canon at last.

While it does seem likely that the Knights of the Old Republic Remake will be outside the current Star Wars canon, primarily due to it being a remake, Lucasfilm Games has not confirmed this either way so it could become part of full continuity.

The Knights of the Old Republic story is so popular, even though the game was made before the Disney buyout and the new continuity rule, KOTOR has essentially been made canon anyway through references. Star Wars Rebels and Rogue One introduced Hammerhead corvettes that first appeared in KOTOR. Kylo Ren’s mask is heavily influenced by Darth Revan’s. The planet Taris has become full canon. Most recently, The Rise of Skywalker featured red Sith troopers officially called the ‘Revan Legion’ and HK-brand droids appeared in The Mandalorian — and the upcoming High Republic Disney Plus series The Acolyte is strongly rumored to fully introduce and canonize Darth Revan.

So, not only is it possible the Knights of the Old Republic Remake could become the proper canon version of the KOTOR story, but it may be the case that Disney/Lucasfilm has been trying to canonize the characters anyway. Much like this month’s animated series Star Wars Visions, the continuity now isn’t as clear-cut as Disney planned it to be.
