No Man’s Sky Expedition 3: How to start and complete

The wait was a little longer than expected, but Expedition 3 has finally landed in No Man’s Sky. Released alongside the recent Frontiers expansion, this latest adventure is called Cartographers. New stories and new loot await explorers with enough mettle to brave the unknown and chart the skies. Here’s how to start up No Man’s Sky’s Cartographers Expedition.

How to start Expedition 3 in No Man's Sky

To start Expedition 3 in No Man’s Sky, simply select Expeditions from the main menu. From there, you’ll be able to complete all of the Expedition and earn various rewards on a unique save.

For those keeping count at home, the system basically works the same as ever. Expeditions are kept separate from the main experience, so you’ll need to create a new save from the main menu. After that, you’ll be able to complete the Cartographers adventure, plus help upgrade your brand-new ship.

If you haven’t been keeping track, Expeditions were added to No Man’s Sky back in March. Each one tells a fixed story, which is why you need to create a new save. They’re good for new players and returning players alike, as they tend to tell more self-contained stories. And, of course, you can transfer all of your earned loot over to your main save once the quest is complete.

Naturally, Expedition 3 is just part of the much bigger Frontiers expansion, itself quickly following the Prisms update. Among the new offerings is the option to build planetary settlements, a first for No Man’s Sky. Newly appointed Overseers will need to construct buildings, plan events, and gather defense to repel Sentinel raids.

All of this and more is waiting inside No Man’s Sky following the Frontiers update. To begin Expedition 3, simply head to the main menu and create a new save. From there you’ll be directed down the path to eventually complete Cartographers and claim your rewards.
