The latest game set in the Marvel universe, Marvel Future Revolution, is out now. The game takes place following a dimension-colliding Convergence, uniting a range of variants of classic Marvel heroes like Spider-Man and Captain Marvel. As a mobile game, in-app purchases and microtransactions play a large part in making progress. This leaves players with one question: is Marvel Future Revolution pay-to-win?
Is Marvel Future Revolution pay-to-win?
In many ways, Marvel Future Revolution does have pay-to-win mechanics. The game’s main currency is Crystals, which you can earn through missions. However, it’s much easier, but more expensive, to buy them from the in-game store.
Yes, you’ll use Crystals for almost every main purchase in Marvel Future Revolution. This ranges from buying skins for your favorite characters to paying for the Dimension Boxes. These are the game’s equivalent of loot boxes, with a range of cosmetics and upgrades contained within. You can also use Crystals to speed up lengthy wait times to upgrade your heroes. Annoyingly, this means someone could spend real money to quickly boost their character’s stats, before heading into the PvP mode to dominate new players.
On top of this, there are other in-app purchases that give you access to exclusive extras too. The first is the Future Membership service, split into the Alpha Membership, and the Omega Membership. This provides you exclusive perks for heroes, which modify their stats. These perks aren’t unlockable in the base game, and can only be unlocked by purchasing this subscription.
You’re also able to pay extra money to instantly level up some heroes to Level 10, which definitely falls into the pay-to-win category. Currently, that’s available for two characters: Doctor Strange and Black Widow. If you come across these characters in the ranked PvP mode, and they’re topping the leaderboards, you can pretty much guarantee somebody has paid money to boost them. Therefore, it seems like in its current state, Marvel Future Revolution leans heavily on pay-to-win mechanics.
