Will my SSD work with PS5?

Will my SSD work with PS5?

It’s finally time to pop an M.2 SSD into the PS5 to upgrade the storage. That means no more deleting games to make room for other titles, as up to 4 TB of additional storage is supported. There is a catch, however, as not all NVMe M.2 SSDs are created equal and the PS5 only supports some of them.

Will my SSD work as a PS5 storage upgrade?

Will my SSD work with PS5?

Whether or not your SSD will work as a PS5 storage upgrade comes down to a few things: speed, size, and cooling.

  • For speed, 5500 MB/s or faster is recommended. A drive needs to hit these speeds to successfully work with quick-loading games like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Demon’s Souls, and other titles that have immediate loading.
  • For size, the M.2 SSD needs to be 22 mm wide. It can be of the 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 form factors.
  • The cooling aspect also impacts overall size. The drive, including cooling, should be smaller than 110 mm (L) x 25 mm (W) x 11.25 mm (H).

While it might be tempting to forgo a heatsink or other cooling solution, the PS5 requires effective heat dissipation to function optimally. It’s recommended that users have some form of cooler.

Since SSD support has started rolling out, manufacturers have started to label their SSDs with “PS5 Compatible” to help users distinguish which drives are actually going to work. Picking up the wrong SSD can be an expensive mistake to make!

If the above is a bit confusing, worry not, for here’s a guide on the best bang for your buck PS5 SSDs that will work with the latest Sony system.
