Back 4 Blood: PvP multiplayer mode explained guide

The Back 4 Blood PvP multiplayer mode is a highlight of the game so far, but with its beta not being self-explanatory, some players are struggling to understand what they’re supposed to do. Here’s the B4B PvP mode explained and a guide to how everything works.

Back 4 Blood’s PvP is a best-of-three series of rounds, where players take it in turns to assume the roles of the Cleaners (humans) or the Ridden (zombies). Similar to Left 4 Dead’s PvP offering, there are four Ridden classes which each boast their own unique abilities and moves. For instance, the Tallboy has a giant arm that impales other players, while the Reeker deals out a devastating area-of-effect attack if killed while standing in the middle of the Cleaners.

However, unlike L4D, in Back 4 Blood players aren’t simply going through the same stages as they would in the game’s PvE mode. Instead, each match takes place on a small map with a ring around it that shrinks over time, similar to a battle royale. When players are outside of the ring, they take damage, and if they’re downed outside of its perimeter then it’s unlikely their teammate will be able to revive them.

At the start of each round, the Cleaners are asked to scavenge. This means that they have some time to open up crates on the map for new weapons or equipment, such as first aid kits or razor wire to block certain entrances. On the other hand, the Ridden can spend Mutation Points earned while playing in order to upgrade each class of zombie. Note that spending Mutation Points for a particular class will upgrade it for all players, so if there are two Stingers in a match, upgrading it will also help other teammates using the class.

The Cleaners will have to see how long they can survive in a round, while it is the Ridden’s job to overwhelm and kill them. Once all four Cleaners have been downed or killed, the round ends and the timer stops. Now, the teams will switch sides, and the Cleaners will become the Ridden and vice versa. The Cleaners must now beat the time set by their opponents, and if they do so, they’ve won the round. The first team to win two rounds wins the match.

And that’s all there is to know about the basics of Back 4 Blood’s PvP mode. You can check out our thoughts on the beta in our preview here, and whether or not it’s shaping up to be the Left 4 Dead successor fans have been hoping for.

In other news, Pokemon Go players petitioned to have its pandemic safety measures reinstated. A Suicide Squad crossover may also add Polka Dot Man to the battle royale.
