Can you use Xbox Design Lab to make a custom Elite Series 2 controller?

Gamers like having options, especially when it comes to their gaming hardware. This is the reason why Microsoft launched the Xbox Design Lab, a web-based portal that allows players to customize their own Xbox controllers with a variety of bright colors. Microsoft took the lab offline last year, but now it’s back, offering players another chance at a slick custom gamepad. But what about players who want the ultimate customized controller? Can you use Xbox Design Lab to make a custom Elite Series 2 controller?

Unfortunately, you can’t make a custom Elite Series 2 controller using Xbox Design Lab — not yet, anyway. For now, the Xbox Design Lab only allows buyers to customize Xbox Series X|S controllers.

It’s a bit sad, but let’s look on the bright side: You can still make a normal Series X|S controller as wild as you like. The Xbox Design Lab notably offers eight million different color combinations. Face buttons only have a few pre-set schemes, but triggers, bumpers, and body panels can all be set to one of 18 different colors.

To get started, all you have to do is head over to the Xbox Design Lab webpage. There you can create any number of slick gamepads that speak to your individual style. Or, you can go the opposite route, and dream up a hideous ketchup-and-mustard-themed monstrosity.

The point is that the choice is yours. And though you can’t tweak every little detail, the options available far outweigh those from the competition. Seems a little old-fashioned buying controllers with pre-determined color schemes now, doesn’t it?

While you can’t use Xbox Design Lab to create a custom Elite Series 2 controller, you can customize a basic Series X|S controller. However, that’s not to say the opportunity will never come. It’s ultimately up to Microsoft to decide which gamepads are eligible to be customized, and if gamers are vocal enough, the Elite Series 2 could become an option in the future.
