Xbox Series X|S - How to enable FPS Boost

Xbox Series X|S | How to enable FPS Boost

The Xbox team is big on backward compatibility, which has always been a major focus of the Xbox Series X|S. A huge number of old games can be played on the new consoles, and even better, many of them support the FPS Boost feature. This system setting allows older games to run at higher frame rates than were possible when the games first launched. Plus, you can enable FPS Boost with only a few button presses. Here’s what you need to know.

How to enable FPS Boost on Xbox Series X|S

Microsoft has made it simple to turn on FPS Boost for supported games. In fact, most games that support the function have it enabled by default. With that said, you can still manually enable FPS Boost on the Xbox Series X or Series S through the Manage Game menu.

  1. From the My Games & Apps menu, highlight the game you want to use FPS Boost with
  2. Press the Menu button on the controller, then select Manage Games and Add-Ons
  3. Scroll down and select Compatibility Options
  4. Check the box to enable FPS Boost

It’s worth remembering that this function is not available for all games. The list of FPS Boost supported games was short when the feature was first announced, but a few Bethesda games have recently been added into the mix, including The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Special Edition, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76.

It’s also worth noting that the exact performance enhancements offered by the function aren’t the same for every title. Games like Watch Dogs 2 and Far Cry 4 can reach up to 60fps, while New Super Lucky’s Tale can hit up to 4K@120fps on the Series X.

Even though it’s enabled by default, you can turn on FPS Boost for select Xbox Series X|S games through the Manage Games menu. This is also the place to enable Auto HDR, if you’re so inclined. Turn on the boost setting and enjoy your old favorites in all their silky smooth glory.
