Is Black Ops Cold War Zombies free-to-play?

Free-to-play games are so popular these days that even the Call of Duty series has jumped in on the action. Though most of the games in the series cost money, there are a few that can be played for free. But what about Zombies, everyone’s favorite undead-slaying multiplayer mode? Is Black Ops: Cold War Zombies free, or at least free-to-play?

Is Black Ops: Cold War Zombies free-to-play?

No, Black Ops: Cold War Zombies is not free-to-play. However, the Zombies mode for the newest Call of Duty is known to occasionally get limited trials. These trials allow you to play Black Ops: Cold War Zombies free for several days, usually over a weekend.

For now, the Call of Duty franchise only has two free games: Warzone and Call of Duty: Mobile. Up until very recently, the only way to enjoy Zombies was to cough up enough cash to buy the entire game. However, the team at Activision just recently announced the very first free Zombies trial.

This first free trial is slated to begin on Thursday, January 14, 2021, and run all the way through January 21. Zombies will be open to all players across Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC via Battle.net.

It’s not a bare-bones demo, either. The original Die Maschine map will be available to all players, as will Crank, which adds the intensity of zombies that explode after a short period. Finally, users on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 will have exclusive free access to the two-player Onslaught mode.

Of course, you can’t just keep playing the demo forever. After the trial ends, you’ll have to buy the full version of Black Ops: Cold War if you want to keep playing.

Still, this does at least set a precedent. Zombies has always been a paid experience, but the free-to-play model seems to be doing the Call of Duty series well. While Black Ops: Cold War Zombies is not free, limited free trials at least allow you to get a taste of the action without having to spend a dime.
