Why are PS5 downloads so slow?

Sony’s next-generation PS5 hardware packs a lot of punch, but that hasn’t prevented some users from encountering slow download speeds. With many early adopters facing delayed game downloads on PlayStation 5, the situation is far from ideal. But, why are PS5 downloads so slow? Is there a slow internet speed fix to speed up downloads? Here are the causes and some possible workarounds.

Why are my PlayStation 5 downloads slow?

Why are PS5 downloads so slow?

There are several factors that could be causing slow download speeds on PlayStation 5. Some of these are within the users’ control, meaning a homebrew fix is possible, while other causes lie with internet service providers (ISP) and/or PlayStation. In the latter case(s), unfortunately, exercising patience is likely the only option for now.

The current PSN Service Status confirms that players “may experience somewhat slower or delayed game downloads” at the moment. This is due to “unprecedented” demand for the service, caused by a combination of the PlayStation 5 console launch and social distancing. Sony is currently working with ISPs to address internet stability concerns across PlayStation Network and PS5.

While many slow PlayStation 5 download rates will stem from this issue, there are some additional common causes and easy fixes.

How to speed up PS5 downloads

  • Restart the router and modem.
  • Assign the PS5 a static IP address and place it in the DMZ.
  • Pause and then resume slow downloads.
  • Switch from a wired to a wireless connection, or vice-versa.
  • Close any software that’s currently running.

This problem (and the potential fixes) aren’t isolated to PlayStation 5; Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox Series X|S consoles are currently struggling with the same issue.

As the PS5 launch hype begins to die down and the world eventually returns to a new normal, PlayStation 5 download speeds should speed up naturally. Until then, although it’s inconvenient, try to enjoy some of the great launch games like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Bugsnax. If they haven’t downloaded yet, for obvious reasons, Astro’s Playroom comes pre-installed and is an excellent pack-in title.
