How to fix Xbox Series X DVD and Blu-ray not working

Some unfortunate Xbox Series X users are finding that DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Blu-ray playback doesn’t work on the new console. People are encountering a black screen when they attempt to watch disc-based media on Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox. Obviously, that’s quite worrying, but fortunately, there’s an easy fix. Here’s the Xbox Series X DVD and Blu-ray not working solution.

Xbox Series X DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Blu-ray won’t work fix

Xbox Series X DVD and Blu-ray not working

After trying out some games on the Xbox Series X, the next natural step for any movie or television lover is to throw a DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Blu-ray on to check the quality. Thankfully the image quality is great, but discovering that can be harder than it should be. An Xbox Series X black screen bug can strike when attempting to watch disc media. Is this an indication of a faulty console, or something less troublesome?

Here’s what to do after inserting a DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Blu-ray into an Xbox Series X console and receiving a black screen:

  1. Remove the DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Blu-ray disc from the Xbox Series X console.
  2. Reboot the Xbox Series X.
  3. Re-insert the disc.

The Xbox Series X DVD and Blu-ray not working fix is incredibly simple, only requiring users to remove the disc, restart the console, then re-insert the disc. The fix comes directly from Microsoft, though hopefully, the Xbox manufacturer is also working on a dedicated fix in a future console update.

Now that the Xbox Series X DVD & Blu-ray playback issues are addressed, maybe these Xbox Series X|S guides can be of use. The EA Play app doesn’t currently work on next-gen Xbox consoles, but there’s an easy workaround. Additionally, some early adopters are having issues with overly dark gameplay capture and flickering screens, so click the relevant link(s) if those apply.
