How to upgrade weapons in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Knowing how to upgrade weapons in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is key to making sure that Eivor is at their best. This is especially important since Valhalla is less of an RPG than the previous two incarnations. This change in approach means that upgrading the suite of axes and swords is a bit different than usual. Here’s how to upgrade weapons in ACV.

There are two ways to upgrade weapons in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and they both are interlocking systems. One must be done at the blacksmith (called “enhancing”) and the other is done at the menu.

Upgrading in the inventory menu

Upgrading in the inventory is quite easy as it can be done anywhere. It just needs some iron ore, leather, and sometimes titanium. Go to the the weapon screen and hold the Square button on PlayStation and the X button on Xbox to upgrade.

Each piece of gear can be leveled up multiple times, as represented by the small rectangles above the rune slot for each gear. The amount of upgrades in the inventory menu is limited by how many times the gear has been upgraded at the blacksmith.

Upgrading at the blacksmith

Upgrading at the blacksmith — which the game calls “enhancing — enables players to upgrade more times at the inventory screen. Players must visit Gunnar’s blacksmith shop at the settlement and spend carbon ingots, nickel ingots, or tungsten ingots to enhance gear. Enhancing weapons not only gives them a different look, but it also raises their stats and lets players upgrade them more times in the inventory menu.

Each enhancement stage opens up new “rectangles” to be filled in. The above picture shows the fine Varin’s Axe with two upgrade rectangles on the left while the superior Varin’s Axe on the right has four upgrade rectangles. In essence, enhancing gear through the blacksmith lets players upgrade them more times. The skill tree has no bearing on what weapons can be upgraded.
