Dragon Killing Guide
Dragon Age: Inquisition includes 10 optional high dragons that pose a far bigger challenge than the rest of the game. If you plan to tackle these large foes, make sure you're prepared. Killing all 10 high dragons results in the Dragons' Bane achievement/trophy.
General Tips
- Even if you're playing on normal difficulty, dragon fights are a great opportunity to use tactical view. Party AI is solid for the most part, but in dragon fights your companions have a way of standing in front of fire or other dangerous attacks. Get the most out of your party and directly control all of them. It will make the fight much easier.
- Make sure you use barriers often with your mage and build up your guard with warriors. Dragons deal a lot of damage, but if you have protection you can focus on offense.
- When dragons start to fly, just run around the battlefield and keep an eye out for attacks. You should be able to avoid any projectiles with enough movement.
- Keep an eye out on health and use potions accordingly.
- It's worth it to kill high dragons in Inquisition as they all have great loot. This includes some of the best materials for crafting armor and weapons.
Common Attacks
Though each high dragon in Inquisition is unique, all 10 of them use the same basic attacks. They include:
- Claw swipes that do little damage.
- A tail swipe that can knock down the player or their allies. Don't stand directly behind a dragon for too long.
- The dragon will shoot a projectile at the player with their particular element. It can be easily dodged with enough distance between the player and dragon.
- The dragon will shoot their element (fire, electricity, etc) right in front of them, catching all characters in a certain range. Simply move far away or go under the dragon's belly to avoid it. This is one spot where tactical view is key, since character like to stand right there and take the damage.
- Perhaps the most dangerous common attack is a wind vortex in which the dragon flaps its wings and draws ranged characters near the dragon. It deals a lot of damage. Melee characters that are right next to the dragon won't be affected, so make sure your warriors are not standing far away. Not much can be done to avoid the attack with ranged characters, though you can try to get behind cover.
