What is the Sword Art Online Progressive episode 1 release date?

Sword Art Online Progressive episode 1 release date

Unfortunately, the Sword Art Online Progressive episode 1 release date will likely be 2021 at the earliest, perhaps even 2022. Following the ending of Sword Art Online Alicization War of Underworld, the official Sword Art Online U.S. Twitter account revealed that an anime production of Progressive is now in the works. You can see the tweet below, which contains a small teaser trailer:

Typically speaking, following an initial reveal, anime series’ take a year, at least, to release. Hence the vague 2021 release date at the earliest given above. Given the delicate state of the world during this ongoing pandemic, however, don’t be surprised if SAO Progressive releases in 2022. We’ll update this guide, of course, with a release date when one is revealed.

It’s safe to assume that SAO Progressive will be available to watch (when it does release) on any one of Crunchyroll, Funimation, or HiDive. Given the popularity of the anime, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it streaming on more than one platform. Sword Art Online Progressive, however, is not a sequel series to Alicization. It is instead a retelling of the anime’s original Aincard arc, through a different lens.

Sword Art Online Unital Ring will be the sequel series. Unfortunately, though, Unital Ring looks as if it is getting a 2023/2024 release date. SAO Progressive will be your stop-gap series while you’re waiting for Unital Ring to begin.
