Do PS4 controllers work with PS5

Will PS4 controllers work with PS5?

The release of the PlayStation 5 is coming, and fans want to know if its time to buy new gamepads. Sony has been cagey on whether or not PS4 controllers will work on PS5, but we now have an answer. Unfortunately, whether or not you can use the DualShock 4 on PS5 isn’t a simple yes or no prospect.

Can you use the PS4 controller on PS5?

The PS5 is bringing a whole new revision of the traditional PlayStation controller. Unlike the Xbox Series X controller, which is basically a slightly revamped Xbox One gamepad, the DualSense adds multiple new features. In addition to the functions found on the DualShock 4, the DualSense has haptic feedback, a built-in mic, and adaptive triggers.

Because of the new gameplay possibilities offered by the DualSense, Sony stated that the DualShock 4 can’t be used with PS5 games. Its official statement is:

“We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.”

However, that doesn’t mean that the PS4 controller is entirely incompatible with the PS5. You can still connect the DualShock 4 to the PS5 and use it to navigate menus and apps. You can also use it to play backward compatible PS4 games.

The current list of PS4 peripherals and accessories compatible with PS5 (via PlayStation Blog) is:

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and
  • supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5)
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

The PlayStation Camera was also mentioned, but it won’t be compatible with the PS5 out of the box. Instead, you’ll need to purchase an adapter to connect it to the new console.
