Is PES 2021 Canceled?
No. Pro Evolution Soccer 2021 is not canceled. Konami today confirmed that PES 2021 will be released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC as a budget standalone title. It will be, from what we can gather, a reskin of PES 2020 with a Seasonal squad refresh. While it’s disappointing that the new PES game doesn’t have the same level of development as previous entries, it is because Konami has switched over to a new engine for PES 2022 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. This has led the developer to instead focus on the next-gen PES title, releasing at some point in the second half of 2021.
Taking to its official Pro Evolution Soccer website, Konami broke the news of what’s going on with PES this year and next. It is said that “the sheer scale of everything” Konami is “aiming to achieve for” its “next-gen debut has made it necessary to pare back… efforts in other areas of development.” This has led Konami to “launch this year’s PES as a streamlined offering in the form of a season update.” PES 2021 will not be releasing on PS5 or Xbox Series X.
Konami explained that the game will release “at an affordable anniversary price and will also come with several bonuses.” Unfortunately, as of writing, we don’t know when the PES 2021 release date is. Expect it to launch at a similar time to previous entries, coinciding with new soccer seasons beginning in Europe. For now, though, know that the game likely won’t feature any upgrades over PES 2020. It is not canceled, though, which is good news.
