The Season 4 update for the latest Call of Duty has been deployed today, which is registering as an 84 GB update in Modern Warfare for some players. Modern Warfare is now notorious for huge updates, and the Modern Warfare update today is no exception.
However, all is not what it seems for those with an 84 GB update. Let’s take a look at why the Modern Warfare and Warzone update is so big today:
Why is there an 84 GB update in Modern Warfare?
The update on June 11, 2020 shouldn’t actually be registering as 84 GB. The Season 4 update adds live events, a 50v50 mode, and more, but while it’s a sizable update 84 GB isn’t actually the correct file size.
Officially, the download size is 32.5 GB on PS4, and up to 45 GB on PC and Xbox One. However, players on Xbox One are finding that the game is clocking up to 84 GB, which Activision has now confirmed as an error.
“We’re actively investigating an issue for #ModernWarfare where some players on Xbox are seeing a larger than expected download size for today’s update,” the Activision Support Twitter account tweeted. “Stay tuned for updates.”
The issue has yet to be resolved, with the download size still clocking in at 84 GB on Xbox One.
Fortunately, this new Modern Warfare update will reduce the overall disc space that Modern Warfare and Warzone take up. Assets will be compressed, and after this initial hefty download, the Season 4 launch will only take up an additional 4 GB on consoles, according to Infinity Ward Communications Manager Ashton Williams.
So even though this particular update may set you back a bunch of storage space, the good news is that future updates should be less impactful. Considering that many have had to clear out a bunch of storage space to make way for Modern Warfare updates, this is a pleasant change of pace.
