Fallout 76 Mysterious Button | What does the button do?

Like many newer games, Fallout 76 leaves a lot of things unexplained. And while that’s typically fine when it comes to lore, it’s another matter when it involves manipulable objects. Such is the confusion over the mysterious button. It seems to serve some sort of purpose, but it isn’t always active. What does the mysterious button in Fallout 76 do, and is there any reason to mess with it? Read on to find out.

Fallout 76 | What is the Mysterious Button?

Fallout 76 mysterious button what does button do

You’re likely to find a mysterious button in Fallout 76 when exploring certain areas, particularly around outhouses or port-a-potties. They don’t serve any purpose until you’re near the end of the game. In other words, the mysterious button won’t do anything until you’ve reached the final moments in Fallout 76.

If you want to avoid spoilers, skip the next two paragraphs. For everyone else, feel free to continue reading. Spoiler alert: Each of the mysterious buttons is tied to one of three nuclear silos spread across Appalachia — Sites Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie. These silos come into play during the game’s final mission, I Am Become Death. Specifically, these buttons mark exit doors for elevators that lead to and from missile control rooms. Mysterious buttons seem to serve no purpose otherwise.

All entertaining naming conventions aside, the function of these buttons is no longer a mystery once players reach the endgame. And, considering this is a Bethesda game, the elevator shafts may be a tongue-in-cheek reference to the old adage of “putting an elevator in an outhouse.” To quote the movie Road House, “it don’t belong.”

If you find a mysterious button in Fallout 76, take note of its location. Though it may not serve any purpose when you first find it, its function will become obvious near the end of the game. It can be safely ignored until then.
