Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a very social sort of game. After all, the series has made its calling on the back of its strong multiplayer components. Still, sometimes you don’t want people to know you’re playing. This begs the obvious question: How do you appear offline in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare? As is to so happens, the function doesn’t work quite like you might expect.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare | How to appear offline
To appear offline in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Warzone, you need to change a setting in your Activision profile. Even if you’re set to appear offline on PS4 or Xbox One, you won’t appear offline in-game unless you change your Activision profile status.

Yes, it’s a little bit annoying. Still, it’s not exactly unusual. Several other games have in-game social functions that completely ignore the status set by outside friends lists.
Here’s how to change your Activision profile status in order to appear offline in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone:
- Navigate to the Activision website and log in
- Once logged in, head to Account Management
- Under Linked Accounts, change the toggle for Sign On Visible to off
It’s worth mentioning that the Activision website has been overhauled fairly recently. As such, some of the profile options have been moved around. If you can’t find the Account Management section, look for an option for Account Linking. There you’ll be able to change your online status for any accounts linked to your Activision profile.
It’s a pain, but to appear offline within Modern Warfare, you have to change your sign-in status on the Activision website. Simply choosing to appear offline on PS4 or Xbox One won’t work, since the in-game friends list overrides any platform-specific social tools. Of course, if you’re trying to hide from only a few specific players, it’s worth reconsidering keeping them on your friends list to begin with.
