One of the initial barriers you’ll find in Resident Evil 3 remake is several chained doors. To cut the chain, you’ll need to find a pair of bolt cutters, the location of which isn’t apparent right away. You’ll also need the bolt cutters to obtain a powerful weapon that will remain useful until the end of the game.
Below you can find a list of all the chained doors, as well as the weapon that’s in a cabinet locked by chains. We’ll also show you where the bolt cutters are located in Resident Evil 3 remake so you can access all these locations.
Where are the Bolt Cutters in Resident Evil 3 remake?
Before you can get the Bolt Cutters, you’ll need to put out the fire northeast of the subway station. To do this, you’ll need to get the fire hose, which can be found at the subway office northwest of the west entrance to the donut shop. Once you’ve grabbed the hose, you can return to the alley that’s on fire and use it on the hydrant to extinguish the flames.
Once the fire is out, you can head further into the alley and enter an auto repair garage. On a tool rack inside, immediately across from the door you just passed through, is the bolt cutters.
So to summarize finding the location of the bolt cutters:
- Grab the fire hose from the subway office.
- Head to the alley on fire northeast of the subway station.
- Use the fire hose with the hydrant to put out the flames.
- Go through the newly-opened area and enter the garage.
- Pick up the bolt cutters from the tool rack across from the door.
What chains can I use the bolt cutters on in Resident Evil 3 remake?
There are four chains you can cut in Resident Evil 3. However, only one of these is required to proceed in the game.
The chained locations are:
- The supermarket across from Toy Uncle.
- The gate to the alley west of the donut shop.
- The cage holding the shotgun in the subway office.
- The door leading into the garage area of the auto shop.
Once you’ve cut all four chains, you’ll notice that the bolt cutters now have a small trash can icon in the corner. When you see this, you can discard them from the inventory to free up a slot. If you’re like me, you’re probably antsy about discarding such a useful item. You don’t have to worry, though; Resident Evil 3 remake will never let you drop a key item if it still has any use left in the game.
The only chain you absolutely have to cut is the one on the door leading into the garage. The supermarket and alley are optional areas containing ammo, health items, and files. However, despite the fact it’s technically optional unless you’re doing a speedrun, you’ll want to grab the shotgun. You have to go back to the subway office to route the train anyway, so it’s a very brief detour if you pick it up after turning the power back on at the substation.
If you want to have an easy time exploring these optional areas and you’re not trying to beat the game quickly, I suggest you head back to the downtown area as soon as you get the bolt cutters and cut all the chains then. This gives you the shotgun for the substation section and plenty of health and ammo for when Nemesis pokes his head out again (and he will).
