To change your name in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you need to change your Activision ID. However, that’s not something you can do in-game. Instead, you need to log in to your Activision account and change your Modern Warfare name from there.

That might seem a little confusing, but the facts here are simple: Instead of your platform ID such as a gamertag or PSN ID, Modern Warfare calls on Activision IDs to present player names. These can be unique or they can be duplicates — the only hard and fast rule is that they can’t contain anything offensive or explicit.

If you want to change your name in Modern Warfare, what you need to do is change your Activision ID. Here’s how the process works.

  1. Head over to the Activision website and log in using your Activision credentials
  2. Once logged in, head over to your Profile page
  3. From the Profile page, select Basic Info
  4. Look for the Activision ID listing, then click the nearby Edit button
  5. Enter the name you’d like to use in Modern Warfare, then click Save

It’s a little bit of a runaround, but it’s still very simple to change your name in Modern Warfare. Confusing though it may seem, the ability to customize your Activision ID means you won’t be stuck using your gamertag or other platform ID — at least not while playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or other Activision-published games.
