It’s been 21 years (soon to be 22) since Pokemon Red and Blue released in North America, and the number of Pokemon has increased dramatically since the original 151. The National Pokedex — while absent in Pokemon Sword and Shield — now ranges from Bulbasaur to Eternatus, bringing the total number of Pokemon in 2019 to almost 1,000. But just how many Pokemon are there in each generation, and how many total Pokemon are there now? This comprehensive guide covers every Pokemon added to the National Dex since the series’ inception.
How many Pokemon are there in 2019? | Total National Dex count
Before we list the total number of Pokemon, note that regional forms of old (Galarian and Alolan forms) are counted as simply alternate forms of the Pokemon they’re based on, and therefore they don’t have their own Pokedex numbers. With this in mind, here is the current count for the total number of Pokemon:
- As of the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield, there are 890 Pokemon in total.
If the National Dex included the 31 Galarian and Alolan forms in the total count, this number would be increased to 921 total Pokemon. Of course, counting all Pokemon’s gendered forms, Alcremie and Vivillon’s appearance differences, alternate forms like Darmanitan’s Zen Mode, and Type: Null and Arceus’ type variants would easily bring the total above 1,000 (not to mention Spinda’s nearly infinite spot pattern possibilities).

Since the newest Pokemon games do not have access to the full National Pokedex, Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Regional Dex includes only 400 Pokemon, with an additional 35 unnumbered Pokemon found in the game’s data potentially obtainable through special events. This means Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the Pokemon games with the most obtainable monsters, as players are able to use any of the 807 Pokemon released up to that point.
