Is Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order open world?

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order just released today, November 15, and is earning rave reviews. EA is surely pleased with the warm welcome and Respawn Entertainment once again proved that it is a top-tier studio capable of handling any kind of franchise. If initial impressions are anything to go by, Jedi Fallen Order could become one of the best Star Wars games ever created. But the question that is in the mind of many players is the following: Is Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order open world? Let’s answer this pressing doubt.

Is Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order open world or linear?

Is Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order open world

First and foremost, Jedi Fallen Order is a third-person action-adventure where you play as a young Padawan. With such a vast world and many planets to discover and explore, it is legitimate to think that Respawn could go for an open world approach to this epic.

Is Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order open world? The straightforward answer to this question is no, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order isn’t an open world game as we know them, with prime examples of the genre being as Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

However, it’s not as simple as it sounds. Jedi Fallen Order is a game where you go where the campaign leads you, but there are optional areas ripe for exploration. As you wander across the planets, you unlock shortcuts that take you to previously explored areas. The world becomes interconnected and far easily accessible according to your progress, giving it a slight open world feel that yet isn’t entirely faithful to the moniker. This is another nod to Dark Souls, a series that Jedi Fallen Order seems to draw inspiration from on many levels.

So, Jedi Fallen Order isn’t open world, despite some appreciated freedom of exploration that you get along the way. Considering the gargantuan scope of the Star Wars mythos, an open world Star Wars game would be a dream come true, but Jedi Fallen Order isn’t the one.
