The Spyro & Friends Grand Prix is entirely free, but it may well ask you to update the game before you can take part in it. Unfortunately, too, you will need an internet connection and PlayStation Plus, Xbox Live Gold, or a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to take part in the Grand Prix. Upon beginning your Spyro & Friends Grand Prix, you will notice that everything is Spyro themed. You’ll see Spyro rearing his head everywhere. The main menu, the new Grand Prix cinematic, and in the game. There’s plenty of Spyro to go around.

As explained above, taking part in the Grand Prix is easy enough. Doing so will give you access to plenty of new content, including characters, karts, items, and more. It would seem that there has never been a better time to be both a Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot fan. We’ll explain it all to you down below, including a relatively in-depth look at the new track: Spyro Circuit.

New CTR Spyro Grand Prix Characters

CTR Spyro Grand Prix

Along with plenty of new items, karts, and Spyro themed changes to CTR, the Spyro & Friends Grand Prix brings with it three new unlockable characters. All of these are lifted from the Spyro the Dragon franchise. These are as follows:

  • Gnasty Gnorc
  • Hunter the Cheetah
  • Spyro the Dragon

You will unlock Spyro through the Bronze Tier of the Grand Prix Rewards. This means that you should unlock Spyro as a playable character simply by playing through a number of online matches, earning enough Nitro Points in the process. Both Gnasty Gnorc and Hunter the Cheetah will be available to purchase from The Pit Stop for an as-yet-unannounced Wumpa Coin price.

Also available as unlocks are plenty of new character skins. This includes the following (again, none of the character skin prices have been confirmed as of writing):

  • Dark Spyro
  • Devil Dog Zam
  • Gnome Real Velo
  • Goblin Small Norm
  • Orc Big Norm
  • Viking Polar
  • Wizard Komodo Joe

New CTR Spyro Grand Prix Karts

Along with the new playable characters, you will also be able to unlock new karts to drive in. This includes both the Spyromobile and the Gnasty Ride karts. More karts are available to unlock via the Grand Prix Tiers, too.

As part of the Grand Prix, you will also be able to unlock new paint jobs, decals, and stickers that you can use to apply another few layers of personalization to your karts. Of course, some of these decals and paint jobs will be Spyro themed.

That’s not all. If you finish in the top 5% of the Spyro & Friends Grand Prix leaderboards, you will earn yourself the rather swish new Champion Kart and Signature Decal which you can see in the image above.

New CTR Spyro Grand Prix Track | Spyro Circuit

CTR Spyro Grand Prix

The new track has been designed for this Grand Prix and will be available to everyone taking part, seemingly without the need to unlock it. You’ll be able to make use of the track both online and locally during and after the Grand Prix. The PlayStation Blog describes Spyro Circuit as “a celebration of all things dragon.” Everything you see in the track has been lifted to some extent from Spyro the Dragon games. This goes so far as to change up the items. Treasure chests have replaced the standard Power-up crates, Gems have taken place of Wumpa Fruit, and Sparx has replaced the invincibility masks.

Fans of Spyro will note the soundtrack of Spyro Circuit is Spyro-themed, too. You’ll race through the Artisans Homeworld castle, navigating your way through its library, inspired by the Dark Hollow level, watching out for the explosive fireworks crate and through a few Portals.

The first Portal takes you to an area inspired by the Magic Crafters Homeworld High Caves level, avoiding magic blasts from a wizard duel. Meanwhile, the second Portal takes you back into the castle, which has been drastically transformed by the wizards, taking inspiration from both High Caves and Wizard Peak. Those floating platforms could cause some trouble. At long last, the third and final Portal takes you back into the Artisans Homeworld. It all ends with a dangerous loop filled with explosive crates before you face a tough jump. It could all get rather tense and difficult here.
