Final Fantasy XIV Sequel

Final Fantasy XIV Sequel | Will we get a new Final Fantasy MMO?

Final Fantasy XIV first came out in 2010, although it was so disappointing it eventually was pulled and re-launched in 2013 as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, and it has enjoyed enormous popularity ever since then. Nevertheless, the MMO has been running between six to nine years, depending on how you count it. Isn’t it about time we heard about a Final Fantasy XIV sequel? Previous franchise MMO Final Fantasy XI had been around for just eight years when FFXIV first launched, so will we get a new Final Fantasy MMO anytime soon?

Will there be a Final Fantasy XIV sequel?

At Gamescom this week, German website Spieletipps spoke with Final Fantasy XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida, and the game’s main story writer Banri Oda. They asked them about multiple subjects, including when Xbox One owners can expect to see the MMO on their platform, but they also asked about the possibility of a Final Fantasy XIV sequel.

The developers both confirmed that Square Enix has no plans for another Final Fantasy MMO at this time. The publisher fully supports Final Fantasy XIV, and plans to continue providing story and quest updates for presumably a long time to come. This could mean that Final Fantasy XIV will get ported over to PS5 and Xbox Scarlett through normal ports or through backwards compatibility.

Why are there no plans for a Final Fantasy XIV sequel?

There are potentially many reasons why Square Enix isn’t considering another Final Fantasy MMO at this time. The most obvious is that Final Fantasy XIV is still incredibly popular, and not all players would want to give it up for a new game. MMOs generally have a long lifespan, for example DC Universe Online, which launched at a similar time to Final Fantasy XIVis still going and just this month received a Switch port. If FFXIV is not showing any decline in popularity, then there’s currently little need for a sequel.
