Pokemon Go Safari Zone – Shiny Pinsir, Relicanth, and More

The new Pokemon Go Safari Zone feature has finally launched, bringing lots of new opportunities for players to catch unique Pokemon with it. Gen 3’s Relicanth, which could only be caught by using the HM Dive, is now up for grabs, as is Shiny Pinsir. Pinsir has been a fan-favorite ever since it was launched back in Gen 1, and will likely continue to be with Pokemon Let’s Go just around the corner. Here’s everything you need to know about the Pokemon Go Safari Zone, including how to get to the Safari Zone and how to catch Shiny Pinsir and Relicanth.

Pokemon Go Safari Zone – How to Get to the Safari Zone in Pokemon Go

The Pokemon Go Safari Zone feature was announced on the official Pokemon Go Twitter page. Taking place in Tainan, Taiwan, Niantic had the following to say:

Although there have been widespread reports of Pinsir and Relicanth encounters, Bagon, Swablu, and Anorith can be seen on the official Pokemon Go Safari Zone poster. Evolving into Salamence, Altaria, and Armaldo, respectively, these first evolutions will give players the opportunity to get themselves some incredibly powerful Pokemon down the line.

Unown is also featured on the poster, which is interesting considering its widespread appearance during Paris Games Week, London Comic Con, and PAX Australia. Its inclusion in the Safari Zone event makes it seem as if Unown is set to become a staple for future Pokemon Go major events. If you attend them all, you’ll have the whole alphabet caught in no time. If not, you’ll still likely be able to catch yourself some very rare Pokemon at the next Pokemon Go event near you.

Pokemon Go Safari Zone – How to Catch Unown

The Unown letters available in the Tainan Safari Zone are the letters used in spelling out “TAINAN ZONE.” Therefore, the letters T, A, I, N, Z, O, and E are up for grabs for trainers who happen to be attending the Safari Zone event in Taiwan.

Like previous events, although Unown are appearing, they are perhaps the most rare spawns in the event. However, the Tainan Safari Zone is due to run from 10:30 AM – 4:30 PM November 1 to November 5, so players will have plenty of time to catch all of the Unown that are available.

Pokemon Go Safari Zone – Safari Zone Eggs

As well as the unique spawns tied to the Tainan Safari Zone, there is also a unique way in which trainers can hatch eggs. With over 50 PokeStops within the Safari Zone itself, players are likely to amass a huge amount of eggs over the course of the event.

All eggs are marked as 2km eggs and will hatch after walking that distance; however, these eggs have a chance of hatching 5km and 10km Pokemon, too. Therefore, the elite 10km egg Pokemon can be hatched by simply walking 2km, allowing players to collect a massive number of rare and powerful Pokemon at a greatly reduced cost.

10km hatches are as rare as 10km eggs, but because all eggs only take 2km of walking to hatch, the odds are still greatly improved, especially if players have a few extra incubators to make use of.

The following Pokemon can be hatched from 10km eggs:

  • Chansey
  • Dratini
  • Porygon
  • Snorlax
  • Larvitar
  • Mareep
  • Bagon
  • Beldum
  • Chimecho
  • Feebas
  • Slakoth
  • Trapinch
  • Shinx
  • Riolu

If you’re in Tainan and you’re eager to get yourself a Luxray or a Lucario, it’s time to get walking!

Pokemon Go Safari Zone – Is the Safari Zone Worldwide?

A recent Reddit post by Dronpes, executive of the popular subreddit “The Silph Road,” had the following to say:

The Silph Road has reached out to Niantic for confirmation and from what we’ve received we believe this shiny is receiving a roll-out just like Wingull at Yokosuka – meaning spawns are boosted in Tainan, Taiwan’s Safari Zone, but the shiny is in the wild worldwide!

Therefore, the odds of encountering a shiny have been drastically increased on a global scale. Players now have a 1/450 chance of encountering a Shiny Pinsir, meaning that although the increased spawns are tied to Tainan, the increased probability of shininess upon encounter is increased to the same degree. This means that those who have gotten a Pinsir nest near them after the most recent migration are in luck. They may not have access to the increased spawns of other Safari Zone Pokemon, but they will reap the rewards from the Safari Zone Shiny bonus!

However, it is important to mention that for Roselia, Wingull, Plusle, and Minun, spawn rates were also increased during the weekends of their Safari Zone events. Therefore, spawn rates for Pinsir may increase worldwide on November 3 and November 4, meaning that players all over the world will have a massive chance of encountering a Shiny Pinsir.

So, if you happen to be in Tainan this weekend, be sure to visit the Safari Zone. The Pokemon Go Safari Zone will run until Monday, November 5, so there’s plenty of time left to join in on the fun. If you aren’t in Tainan over the next few days, be sure to head out over the weekend, as it’s likely you’ll at least be able to benefit from increased spawn of Shiny Pinsir. Keep an eye out for future Safari Zone events, too, as there could be one coming to your hometown in the near future.
