Fallout 76 Location: Where Is the Game Set?

Fallout 76, the online multiplayer spin-off of Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic RPG series, is coming soon. There will be a beta in October and the game will be out November 14. But do we know anything about the Fallout 76 location? Have any areas from that location been revealed? What do we know about Vault 76 from Fallout lore? Let’s have a look.

What Is the Fallout 76 Location?

As the trailer song “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver suggested, Fallout 76 is set in West Virginia. The game’s map will be four times the size of Fallout 4‘s. At the center is Vault 76, where you emerge from at the beginning of the game along with your fellow players.

While we don’t yet have the full map, various locations within that map have already been revealed. The game world will be divided into six areas: Ash Heap, Cranberry Bog, Savage Divide, The Forest, The Mire, and Toxic Valley. Major towns within those areas include Charleston, Watoga, Lewisburg, Bolton Greens, Morgantown, and Beckley. Notable places of interest include the Top of the World Ski Resort and a Nuka-Cola Quantum bottling plant.

What Do We Know About Vault 76?

Vault 76 was mentioned briefly in both Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. While most Vaults are experimental and usually have something weird or wrong with them (who can forget Vault 108, filled entirely with clones who can only say “Gary?”), Vault 76 was a “control vault.” This means that the Vault Dwellers inside were relatively normal.

Vault 76 was meant to open 20 years after the great war that devastated the world, on the United States’ tricentennial in 2097, but actually opened five years’later in 2102. Going by the Fallout 76 trailer, the occupants called this day “Reclamation Day.” It is one of the first Vaults to be opened, long before the ones in Fallout 1 through 4. It was also meant to hold 500 occupants, but somehow we don’t think Bethesda are going to pay much attention to that number as it rather limits the player base.
