Pixel 3 XL Notch Size

Pixel 3 XL Notch Size: How Big is the Pixel 3 XL Notch?

The idea of a Pixel 3 XL notch intrigues you whereas the size has you worried. That’s understandable. The last year of smartphones has ushered in a trend that brought us closer to the bezel-less display. But like it or not, that earpiece and front-facing camera can’t just disappear underneath a glass panel like the fingerprint reader has in the last few months.

The Google Pixel 2 XL didn’t opt for a notched display like other high-end phones of the season, but leaks and rumors suggest that a Google Pixel 3 XL notch is coming. The size, however, is difficult to work out through images alone.

Google Pixel 3 XL Notch Size – How Big is the Google Pixel 3 XL Notch?

If we’re right in assuming it’ll be LG behind the screen tech of the Pixel 3 XL, just as it was with the Pixel 2 XL last year, then we’ll look to other LG flagships for a rough idea of what to expect.

Size-wise, leaked images on Twitter suggest the Pixel 3 XL is expected to be around 6.2 inches long and 3 inches wide, making it identical to the last. A switch to a 19:9 aspect ratio over the last-gen 18:9 would likely come from stretching out the panel to almost the entire front body and incorporating a notch to house things like the earpiece, front camera, and light sensor.

Google acquired HTC less than a year ago now, so we’re left to assume the tech and staff brought in through that deal will have some impact on the Google Pixel 3 XL. But given HTC never put out a notched phone, we’re back to assuming LG still has the reins when it comes to which screen will be used in the device.

So, we’re going to look at LG’s experience with the notch. The Korean tech firm hasn’t had too much to do with the notch just yet, but its flagship phone, the LG G7 ThinQ does sport one. It’s not quite as chunky as the one seen in the Pixel 3 XL notch previews, but if anything, it shows they know how to tailor the notch to suit the phone. We fully expect to be able to hide it just like the LG G7, too, thanks to the deep blacks and individual pixel lighting offer by the P-OLED display LG is likely to throw back into the Pixel 3 XL is they’re still onboard.

Looking at the images, it’s easy to see the difference between the Google Pixel 3 XL notch and the one found on something like the iPhone X – the apparent pioneer of the notched display. The Pixel 3 XL notch won’t be as long as the iPhone’s, or as small as the LG G7 ThinQ, but will sit somewhere in-between. The Pixel 3 XL notch eats up a little more verticle space on the display, but you won’t lose as much horizontal space. The notch support baked into Android will ensure the interface suits the display either way.

Even without throwing math into the ring, a simple eye test of the images suggests the Google Pixel 3 notch takes up around 1/3 of the screen space at the top of the display. If we’re still looking at 3 inches along the top, we’re looking at a 1-inch notch give or take.
