Destiny 2 Update 1.17 Patch Notes

Destiny 2 Exotic Masterworks Explained: What They Are, How to Get Them

With the release of the second expansion, Warmind, today, so too comes the release of Destiny 2 Exotic Masterworks. These Exotic Masterworks are the first time that they have been introduced, as previously, the Masterworks were solely relegated to Legendary items. For those that don’t know, Masterworks was a new tier of gear added that can be tweaked and customized to your liking.

Unfortunately, the Destiny 2 Exotic Masterworks aren’t nearly as customizable as their Legendary counterparts, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t strive to have them. In fact, we highly recommend it as these are sure to be major players in the new endgame content and Crucible.

Destiny 2 Exotic Masterworks Explained: What Are They?

What are the Destiny 2 Exotic Masterworks? Well, think of them as upgraded versions of Exotics. Though not all of them are currently available at the launch of Warmind, Bungie plans to have Masterwork versions of every single Exotic in the game at some point.

As you probably already know, you can only have one armor and one weapon piece of Exotics equipped at any one time. That hasn’t changed, but upgrading your favorite Exotic pieces to Destiny 2 Exotic Masterworks will ensure you are getting the most out of your favorite gear.

Destiny 2 Exotic Masterworks: How to Get

But how do you get Destiny 2 Exotic Masterworks? Well, it’s an interesting process similar to some of the Exotics that have associated quests. First and foremost, you must have the preferred Exotic that you wish to upgrade. To upgrade it, you will need its specific and unique Exotic Masterwork Catalyst.

This baby can only be found in a specific location that is unique to your Exotic or can be randomly dropped. There are supposedly clues to finding yours on some of the Exotics themselves. With the Catalyst, you will be given a sort of mission like with getting Exotics in the first place that must be completed in order to upgrade your item to a Destiny 2 Exotic Masterwork. Good luck!
