Destiny 2 Fated Engrams: What Do They Contain and Are They Worth It?

Destiny 2 Fated Engrams are an item added to the game with the 1.1.1.1/1.13 update. They’re a new Engram that Xur will be selling, albeit at a steep price. These new Fated Engrams have a unique use in Destiny 2, once which will alleviate a significant issue that players have had since the original game came out. For more on Fated Engrams, keep reading below.

What are Fated Engrams in Destiny 2?

A big chunk of Destiny 2’s endgame involves grinding loot. Pretty much every activity you do revolves around getting Tokens or Engrams so you can get more weapons and armor so you can raise your Power level, so you can repeat the process. Exotic Engrams contain powerful, unique weapons that are highly desirable to add to your Destiny 2 collection. Exotic Engrams are relatively hard to find, and they have one big problem: there’s no guarantee you won’t get a duplicate when you open one.

That’s where Fated Engrams come in. When you buy one from Xur, you’re guaranteed an Exotic that you haven’t picked up before. That means that even if you picked up an Exotic weapon or armor in Destiny 2 and dismantled it, you won’t get it in a Fated Engram.

How Much do Fated Engrams Cost in Destiny 2?

If you thought that Fated Engrams weren’t going to have a catch, you’re wrong. Fated Engrams cost 97 Legendary Shards, which may make them the most labor-intensive item to earn in Destiny 2. To get 97 Legendary Shards, you’ll have to dismantle 33 pieces of Legendary gear, or 20 Exotics. With such an investment involves, you should think hard before you purchase.

Are Fated Engrams Worth Buying in Destiny 2?

Whether or not its worth it to buy a Fated Engram in Destiny 2 depends on two things: Xur’s inventory for the week, and how many Exotics you already have.

If you visit Xur for the week, make sure he doesn’t have any items you want. It’s a lot less expensive to just buy Exotics outright from Xur than to roll the dice with a Fated Engram. If you’ve just reached the endgame, or haven’t collected that many Exotics, hold off on buying one of these. You’re better off saving your Legendary Shards and grinding for engrams and purchasing Exotics from Xur each week.

The only time that Fated Engrams are worth it is once you’ve filled out most of your Exotic collection. That way, what you’ll get from the Fated Engram is more predictable.
