Which Gate Should You Choose in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice?

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a harrowing journey for the titular Senua as she finds herself on a journey to recover her lost love. When she reaches the end at the gates to Helheim, she’s faced with an important choice. Which should she choose from the red or yellow gate that lie before here? Believe it or not, there’s a difference here that goes beyond simple aesthetic choice.

There are several differences between both gates that you’ll want to make note of. If you’re not sure which one is right for you or which one you should start with, consult the following for some suggestions as to what you might want to choose. One belongs to the fire giant Surt, and the other to the god of illusion, Valravn. You’ve got to complete the content within both gates, but you can start with either gate you choose.

Choosing the Red Gate

If you opt to choose the Red Gate, you’ll have a slightly simpler path than the Yellow Gate. When you step through the gate, you’ll have to tussle with the annoying shadowy warriors that you met when you first entered the area. You’ll be met with a glyph puzzle to begin with after your fight, which is a little more difficult than the ones you’ll face through the Yellow Gate. If you’re more interested in starting off with puzzle-solving, enter the Red Gate. Your combat prowess likely won’t have been sharpened as much as it should have been just yet by now, so this is a good option for you. The puzzle will require you to combine three different images of runes in the area, and once you do so you’ll be asked to combat the boss at the end of the area.

Choosing the Yellow Gate

The Yellow Gate is a much more difficult affair than the Red Gate, as it throws you into battle yet again just as you’re fresh out of your first fight in the game. You’ll have several rune puzzles to open different doors, but they’ll be punctuated by shadow enemy fights and frustrating moments where you’ve got to not only escape from a potentially fiery death, but also stave off warriors who you’ve got to defeat as quickly as humanly possible. There’s a boss at the end of course, which you’ll have to take out. But overall there’s additional combat with the Yellow Gate and more times that you could fail. If you’re a novice, you might want to take the path of least resistance here and start with the easier feats that stand before you.

Which path are you going to go with? Choose wisely.
